Red Wings prospect had great rookie season in Swedish Elite League
By Chris Turner, Zetterbergfan, October 2001

Detroit Red Wings Swedish prospect Henrik Zetterberg was drafted in the 7th round in 1999. I've been keeping an eye on his stats with his home team Timrå online. He is going to be good. The 20 year-old will be in the NHL for sure, maybe next season or two.
Timrå was good enough to be in the Elitserien (Swedish Elite League) this year. Zetterberg had great year as a rookie at the highest level, leading his team with 15 goals, 31 assists, and 46 points in 47 games. Another year like this past season, and Zetterberg will be considered ready to play in North America. The question is if Scotty Bowman will give a young player like Henrik a chance to make the line-up.

Henrik Zetterberg scored four goals as Sweden beat Finland 5-2 at Stockholm on Sunday (November 11, 2001) to win the Sweden Hockey Games before a sellout crowd of 13,850 spectators at the Stockholm Globe Arena. Russia helped the hosts by beating Czech Republic earlier the same day 3-2. Sweden finished first with 9 points, followed by Czech Republic 8, while Finland and Russia had six points. Canada finished last with one point.

Sweden lost only to Czech Republic, 2-1 on overtime last Thursday.

The 21-year old Zetterberg, who many believe is the most promising young player in Europe right now and is one of the few non NHL hopefuls to make Team Sweden for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, became the sixth player to score four goals for Sweden in an international game since the early 70s. Henrik Zetterberg, who plays for Timra of the Swedish Elite League and whose NHL-rights are owned by the Detroit Red Wings, scored to make it 1-0, 2-0, 3-1 and 4-2. He also won the tournament in scoring with four goals and three assists, followed by Russia's Valery Karpov (1+5=6) and Sweden's Mattias Weinhandl (2+3=5).
